John Spitieri has been nominated by Mark Titchner as an emerging artist whose work may be complimentary to the Channel 4 collection. Their work will be on display in the Channel 4 Headquarters from February 2008.

John’s work relies on a deceptive simplicity. His choice of materials; paper, cardboard and unbleached linen are reflected by his use of a simple earthy colour palette. He uses collage to create maquettes which are the basis for his abstract works.

In his earlier works simple elfin figures, possibly culled from the aboriginal mythology of Dreamtime, populated his paintings. Now these figures seem to eerily emerge from or recede into the background.

In using these semi-abstract hovering figures John hopes to straddle the divide between the abstract and the representational.
