Juliana Sohn was born in Seoul, Korea in 1969 but grew up New Jersey. She studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and now combines advertising and fashion photography with editorial work and her own documentary photography. Sohn's work has been published in a wide range of magazines including The New York Times and Vogue. Among the high profile clients that she has worked for can be counted the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, for which she shot an awareness campaign entitled Where were you when it happened?

The three images in the Channel 4 collection; Untitled (Yellow Tree), Sarah (Girl by Pool) and Carrie (Girl on Grass) were all made in 2000. They form part of the series; Mendham, New Jersey, named after Sohn's hometown. Taken over the course of some three years, the series started out as photographs of the interiors of the high school that Sohn attended in Mendham. However, her work very quickly developed into a documentary study of the students at home, at work, and just hanging out.
