
Born in York in 1964, the work of Angus Boulton embraces film and photography. He has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, most notably in a solo exhibition entitled Open Secret at The Imperial War Museum, London in 2004. His work is held in a number of high profile collections including: the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford; the Imperial War Museum, London; Museum of London and the British Council among others. He is represented by The Photographer's Gallery, London and is research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University. He currently lives and works in London.
Boulton's works Gymnasium, Krampnitz and Potsdam featured in the Channel 4 Collection are part of a series that Boulton begun in 1998 called 41 Gymnasia. In these works Boulton photographed the gymnasiums of abandoned Soviet Military bases in the former Eastern bloc in order to interrogate Cold War history and its ramifications in the present. This photographic project was eventually extended into a film work that was presented at Wapping Project, London in 2006.
