A cycling race that tells the story of an ignored working class housewife from Yorkshire who, even after her death, still holds four cycling world records and whose career achievements have never been equalled... yet not that many people have heard of her.
Imagine there was a cyclist who was more dominant in the sport than Lance Armstrong. Imagine there was a cyclist who won more than Chris Bordman. Imagine a cyclist who set World Records that have stood for nearly 40 years, despite the advancement of cycling technology. Imagine a cyclist who won the British title 25 years in a row. Imagine that cyclist was a working mother from a village near Leeds...
From 1959 to 1977 Beryl Burton did just that. Winning everywhere she went, breaking records in almost every discipline (including men's world records) and leaving male competitors in her wake – she was arguably the most successful cyclist ever. Yet outside of Morley, West Yorkshire she is barely heard of.
After hearing Beryl Burton's story from her boyfriend's mum, and surprised that such an inspirational character and amazing sports person had been overlooked by the media and the nation, Kate Siney realised this hers was a story that needed to be told. The story also fitted Kate's aspirations to make different, creative, edgy, quirky and character-led documentaries perfectly.

Kate has enjoyed watching films from a young age and thought a career in production might be a good way to travel the World, experience new cultures and meet interesting people. Since completing a degree in Media & Communication and Cultural Studies Kate has worked in television. After 2 years as a researcher at The View from the North Productions Kate won a place on Screen Yorkshire's Fast Track training scheme, completing placements at Real Life Media and new indie Atypical Media before moving to her current job as a researcher at Mandrill Television in York.
Aside from production Kate has a keen interest in photography, especially of people and cultures. Earlier this year she visited Cuba and in November she will travel to Sri Lanka to carry out Tsunami relief work as a volunteer. Beryl Burton's story is slightly closer to home but still retains the same strong sense of character and place.
"I'm so excited about making this 3 Minute Wonder. Not only will it be my first project as a director, but I'll also have the chance to work on a great story, with some great people⦠Beryl's family and friends are lovely," comments Kate. "The best thing about making this film is having the opportunity to tell the story and achievements of such an incredible woman... "
