3 Minute Wonder: The Bicycle
The extraordinary story of the invention of the bicycle told irreverently via the ancient teachings of Daoism.

Danny Beck
The teachings of Daoism say there is a source to everything, all things come from Dao and return to Dao – all things are connected. The old adage that a butterfly flapping its wings in China can cause a hurricane in some god-forsaken part of the planet probably isn't true. But what if that butterfly flapping its wings was actually the biggest volcanic eruption ever? And this led to some of the most remarkable cultural events of the 1800's – like the invention of the bicycle.

Having read about the Channel 4 & ITN SOURCE competition, Danny Beck stumbled across the idea for his pitch whilst researching the story of the volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora. His research led him to "one of the most astounding side stories I have ever heard – the tale of a volcano erupting leading to a plethora of cultural events – including the invention of the bicycle."

Danny Beck is a freelance producer working in the independent sector. Having started his career on the high-profile FT2 researcher trainee scheme, he has spent the last five years working on a number of large shows for Channel 4. A Yorkshireman, Danny currently lives in Brixton with his girlfriend Lucy and his cat Sam. His passions include; the cinema, particularly the films of Powell and Pressburger and contemporary Korean films; Leeds United; travel especially in Brazil; old penguin books; gardening; collecting vinyl and Tesco's finest ready meals.

"I'm absolutely over the moon about getting to make my idea for the Britdoc / ITN SOURCE / Channel 4 competition – the opportunity to make my own film, and to have such a great archive collection to plunder, not to mention it being broadcast on Channel 4 and screened at Britdoc is truly a dream come true."
