Independent productions on Channel 4 News - the Indy Fund
No news programme in the UK commissions more independents than Channel 4 News. The Indy Fund works with lone film makers and larger production companies, on both domestic and international stories.

Proposals need an original news line and the potential to become a top story in the Channel 4 News running order. Budgets vary - we fund the costs associated with getting a story researched, produced and edited, plus we pay a production fee of £350 per transmitted minute or part thereof. We can also provide production management support to get a film comprehensively costed, shot and edited. The films themselves can range in length from five to fifteen minutes. You get to keep the international rights to your film and can therefore sell it after transmission on Channel 4 News to international broadcasters.

More 4 News also has a smaller independents fund, making films of shorter duration (up to five minutes). That exclusive edge on a story is still essential.

Examples of recent commissions all these can be watched on The Independents Fund page of the Channel 4 News website here:

Terror in the Somali community - produced by SMI Productions
This film revealed the belief among Britain's security services that dozens of Islamic extremists have returned to the UK from Somalia after attending terror training camps there. The investigation also revealed that a suicide bomber who grew up in Ealing had blown himself up in an attack in Somalia that killed more than 20 soldiers - the first reported case involving a Somali based in Britain. As part of our investigation of jihadism in Somalia, we gained exclusive access to Islamist training camps and interviewed US terror suspect and Islamist leader Hassan Al Turki, who told us of the plans to turn Somalia into a radical Islamic state.

Council Pensions Black Hole - produced by Empirica Films
This exclusive Indy Fund investigation revealed how councils participating in Britain's biggest pension scheme, the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) have been taking more risks with pensioners’ money than private sector pension schemes, contributing to a massive and growing deficit. We revealed that, on average, compared to private sector pensions the LGPS had continued to invest massively in the stock market despite plummeting values – with one council (Worcester) still holding nine-tenths of its funds in shares. We also revealed that some councils had been investing in hedge funds – a number losing money with Bernard Madoff. The report featured exclusive new research which estimated that the LGPS as a whole was in deficit to the tune of around £50 billion.

Alcohol’s Fatal Legacy – produced by Minnow Films In 2008, documentary film-maker Kate Taunton shot and reported this film which investigated the soaring rates of alcohol related cirrhosis of the liver among 25 -34 year olds. In Derby, Kate filmed Stacey who had been hospitalised six times due to her drinking. Liver consultant Dr Jan Freeman warned that Stacey’s drinking was hastening her death. A few weeks after Kate first met Stacey, she died at the age of 24. Kate made four films for the Indy Fund in 2008 and was subsequently shortlisted for Young Journalist of the Year by the Royal Television Society.

Ask yourself: In one sentence, what is the news line of your story? This should be previously unreported. Often a news line is built around an exclusive interview, confidential documents, or a case study. Has your story are been previously covered in the media, if so when and by whom? Explain how your proposal moves the story on - what you have got that makes it a news story. Remember your aim should be to make a film that leads Channel 4 News!
