Q: What subjects and ideas are handled by the History department?
A: We're responsible for all history, including Time Team; all archaeology and ancient history programming originates here too. We also commission biography and contemporary history. We can occasionally make travel and adventure programmes (particularly if they have a historical element) and, like our colleagues in the Science department, can take programmes that cross over between science and history. A close inspection of the Channel 4 website gives a good indication of the range of programmes we make.

Q: Are there any periods of history that you prefer – or any you don't want more of?
A: We don't rule out any periods of history and have made programmes on subjects from pre-history right up to the 1980's and 90's. However, we are commissioning less WWII history now.

Q: Do you work with new companies?
A: Yes! We're always on the lookout for new companies and your company does not need to have worked with Channel 4 before to approach us with any ideas.

Q: I'm an individual with a great idea – should I take it straight to Channel 4 or go to a production company?
A: You should submit ideas via a production company to give your idea the best chance of success. They will be able to tell you if they think the idea is appropriate for submission to the Channel and, if so, will know how best to formulate the proposal. You should approach a company with a track record in making programmes for this department. These can be found via the PACT directory held in libraries or online at www.pact.co.uk Listings magazines such as the Radio Times also carry production company names.
