WHAT WE WANT
We are looking for returnable feature format series (30 mins or 60 mins) to play 20:00 to 21:00 Tuesday to Thursday. The shows must be broad in appeal but also intelligent and distinctively C4.

C4 Features has a reputation for breaking new talent and formats:- new programmes must have a fresh and unique selling point; a new subject area; a compelling new format or great new talent who demands a show. Successful C4 Features faces are real experts with on screen charisma, rather than just 'presenters'. 20:00 is a very tough slot! Shows need to be entertaining, but they also need to be informative - with "take-out" for the audience.

21:00
We are looking for ambitious series ideas along the lines of Big Chef Takes On Little Chef, Grand Designs, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Hugh's Chicken Run - Big bold ideas, the best on-screen talent in their respective fields, and ambitious new formats which tackle important issues in an entertaining way.

We are also looking for Pop Docs which have a sense of wit, mischief and iconoclasm. Risk taking, provocative, noisy one-offs are required, as are short stories. Essentially we are searching for entertaining documentaries about contemporary phenomena.

SUBJECT MATTER
Features Programmes address a wide range of subject matter: food, relationships, property, money, health, design, families. The way we live now is at the heart of the programmes we commission, as is personal transformation.

Aspiration, life-change, risk- taking, and human drama are key to many successful Feature ideas on C4, as is problem-solving and trouble shooting. We want to broaden the range of subject matter we address and are constantly on the lookout for new trends.

We are already well-served with property shows and we do not intend to commission any more. However food is an area we would like to develop further, as is health and money. We are also keen to inject consumer journalism into broad feature formats (but would not commission a consumer magazine show).

Dreams and aspirations remain at the heart of Features programmes, but we are also keen to tap into the 'nightmares' e.g. Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

WHAT WE DON'T WANT
We do want entertaining shows about real people, real journeys with a real point, but we don't want entertainment formats. Being entertaining at 20:00 is not enough; programmes need to have real content and be informative. Purely observational formats are difficult to make work in this slot - but documentary content with some intervention (such as Property Ladder) is interesting. Straight docu-soap isn't right for us, but docu-soap + business / food / the good life etc is still interesting for Thursday, as are character-led series.

Proposals
In the first instance, you should sell your idea to us in three to four paragraphs via the online proposal system. Taster tapes for talent-led ideas are a good way of pitching to us, as are tapes that demonstrate/walk through an idea.

FAQS
This section contains answers to some of the most frequently asked questions in this department. Please browse this page first if you have any questions on any section.

Q: Can producers speak to a Commissioning Editor or come in for a chat about ideas?
A: Unfortunately the pressure placed on the Commissioning Editors' time by programmes that are already in production means they do not have time for general chats. However, the assistants work very closely with the Commissioning Editors and can answer most of the questions you may have so they should be your first point of contact. Meeting with the Commissioning Editors will be arranged only once there is something concrete to discuss so send your ideas in first.
