NEW TALENT STRAND

New Talent Strand

I am commissioning our new 15x30 strand for new directors, which is replacing ‘The Other Side’. This year’s deadline for company submissions to ‘warehouse’ these films, which are being tendered in groups of 2 or 3, has now passed; but I am still on the look out for up-and-coming directors with attention-grabbing, bold and entertaining ideas that they feel passionately about.

Kate Vogel, Editor

3 Minute Wonder is a documentary strand for new directing talent that transmits at 7.55pm on weekday nights directly after the news. It is commissioned as a series of four films (usually from one director) that run from Monday to Thursday. The budget for 3 Minute Wonder is 4K per film so directors generally have an overall budget of 16K per week.

This slot provides a unique opportunity for new directors to tackle intelligent and ambitious issues in the prime-time arena. I’m looking for ideas that have an inherent narrative that can unfold over the 3 minutes. The films must speak to each other thematically across the week, but must also be able to stand alone. 3 Minute Wonder should feel current, reactive and anticipate social change. It can be used effectively as a bridge in the schedule to larger campaigns that the channel explores at 9pm.

Channel 4 Documentary Initiatives
The Documentary Department has recently re-shaped its New Talent commitment in order to maximize the potential of new media and alternative ways of distributing documentaries to audiences.

Our commitment to providing opportunities for new and emerging talent on the core television channel continues.

But now beyond this, there are some exciting new routes for emerging filmmakers and producers to hone their skills and make a breakthrough:

FourDocs is Channel 4’s new broadband documentary channel that is now welcoming submissions from new filmmakers. For more info, please go to www.channel4.com/fourdocs

The Channel 4 British Documentary Film Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation funded by Channel 4.
