Shattered - Dermot O'Leary

Dermot managed to stay awake just long enough to tell us what he wears in bed...

Chat Ed : Welcome to this evening's SHATTERED webchat with DERMOT O'LEARY. This is the show where 12 participants compete to win a potential prize fund of £100,000… by staying awake! Dermot delivered the news from the sleep-deprived studio…

Dermot O’Leary : Hello lovely insomniacs!

christos : hi Dermot
FireGoddess : Good evening Dermot!
Jason : HEY DERMIE!!
penfold : do u like being called dermie?
FireGoddess : can i spank him for being late people Chat Ed?

Dermot O’Leary : Yeah, whatever floats your boat. I’m not precious about my name – my Dad calls me Dermo.

DancingViva_in_Brigh : Hi sexy bum!!
Kaytee23 : Hello Dermot - Surely by allowing the contestants to have some sleep - even if it is only an hour or two, is defeating the object of them not being allowed to sleep - why is this part of the whole experiment?

Dermot O’Leary : The whole experiment is based on sleep deprivation, not total denial. This hasnt been done before so we have to take medical advice and we're not going to play around with peoples’ health. The doctors say when our contestants need sleep, it would be irresponsible not to do what they tell us to do.

Neil : When does sleep depravation become dangerous?
Hannah : Do the contestants suffer any damaging medical conditions due to lack of sleep?

Dermot O’Leary : To start with, we don’t know when it becomes dangerous - the experts we have think a week is fine. The research we have done, essentially says no, although obviously this is unchartered territory but this is what our experts assure us.

kelly : This experiment is absolutely brilliant
Bluey : A lot of the programmes that you host involve people suffering. Do you like to see people suffer and struggle?

Dermot O’Leary : No I wouldn’t say that, most of the programmes I’m involved in involve pride and I think that brings out the best and worst in us. There is a falsity about television that we kidnap people from the streets to put them through this kind of thing - nothing could be further from the truth.

penfold : do u really sleep in the set bedroom?? looks a bit small!
Em S : Dermot, why d'you sleep on set???

Dermot O’Leary : It is a bit small, unfortunately I do sleep there. You only get about 5-6 hours a night for the simple reason that I’m in there first thing in the morning, and last thing at night.

Al : What did u think of the contestants doing the haka last nite? did u get any slepp?

Dermot O’Leary : I thought the effort was great, unfortunately it kept me up till 2am.

christos : the haka idea worked well
Nasa : Did the state Chris got in scare anyone involved with the programme at all?

Dermot O’Leary : “Scare” isn’t the right word, but we were very concerned until Neil pointed out that it is perfectly natural. That is why we gave them their sleep bank early today.

BBFAN : Dermot - Whats your average day like on shattered from when you wake up

Dermot O’Leary : You get up at about 8.30am, you go into the lab to have breakfast for about 30mins, go to the office - 20 yards away, read the update of the story so far -for the loggers normally we do a weary vs. O’Leary challenge. From there we have a script meeting for 2 hours and at 2.30pm I go to do the first voice-overs then I come up and read through my script and we block through the show and the pre-rehearsal, at 5.30pm. At 6.45pm I go for the second lot of voice-overs.

Dermots Darling : big day
tired_tom : good god, show biz is weird

Dermot O’Leary : 7.15pm I read through my cards, while I eat dinner and at 8pm we dress rehearse.

Lisa : sounds shattering!

Dermot O’Leary : 9-10pm are the final changes and at 10pm we go live. Then about half an hour off, then back in till about 11.30pm-12am. Then meetings for the next day, then bed by 2am. With a few drinks thrown in at the end there

gayirishguy : Do you realise that bizarrely a large number of people feel sleepy watching the programme, whist it's fascinating it's strangely tiring to watch?
kimberlee : does watching them being tired make u tired?

Dermot O’Leary : Yes that’s the case for the whole team.

Catt : Is there going to be a Weary v OlEary dance challenge?

Dermot O’Leary laughs

Darko : lol
Nina : Please!!!!

Dermot O’Leary : I hope not! Seeing him dance yesterday, well… he danced the arse off me.

rory : what do u think of the program

Dermot O’Leary : I think it’s daring, I think it’s different and I love working on shows that you can just chuck yourself into. This is one of them.

Fangle : Dermot, if you had to give up something you need for 135 hours, what would you choose?

Dermot O’Leary : Good question…

Lisa : cheese
Clare : whisky?

Dermot O’Leary : I think I’d find it spectacularly easy.

Quo Girl : sex!
Mummy : wearing underpants
doughnut : sex

Dermot O’Leary : Whenever I leave it at home I always quite enjoy it. My mobile phone ;)

MappyUK : Do you think it was fair how Claire M was eliminated last night when someone shouted 'Stick' in the audience and gave Dean and unfair advantage?

Dermot O’Leary : Yea we looked at that and someone didn’t shout it in the audience, they shouted it in the lab.

bex : oohh controversial!!
Lisa : controversial!

Dermot O’Leary : And we watched a similar reaction too when Claire was doing her turn, it was the same vocally, but we didn’t see it so we decided there was no intent so it was fair.

David : who shouted out?

Dermot O’Leary : However, if it had been someone from the audience, we would have let her back in. I’m not entirely sure, it was a collective effort I think.

FireGoddess : Hello Dermot, so are you signed up as *the* reality tv show presenter forever?

Dermot O’Leary : I hope not! At the end of the day you have to work, and there is a culture of reality TV shows around.

nattaly : DERMOT!!!

Dermot O’Leary : But I really enjoy all the jobs I do, and I think they are quite diverse and different.

Jonathan : Why wasn't Lucy offered sleep instead of having to leave? Chris was aloud sleep earlier today.

Dermot O’Leary : Absolutely, Lucy made the decision to leave on her own Chris never asked.

Lorr : i'd like to challenge you Dermot, to a game of ping pong, cause i think i'd beat ya :-p

Dermot O’Leary : I am the world’s most rubbish ping-pong player - I cannot believe I won today. I even tried to lose!

Katie : Dermot, if you grew your hair long would it be an afro?

Dermot O’Leary : Oh yea!

minx : Dermot what do you wear in bed!

Dermot O’Leary : There is no lock on the door! So I am covering up pretty well.

Paul-H : dermot do u want a specific person to win? irishgrl : who do u want to win?

Dermot O’Leary : No, its weird, everyone asks me but it really is difficult when it gets down to these few people because you empathise with them all.

samo : so who do u think will win?
peach : who do u think is going to win?
Colchester girl : Do you fancy Claire? It looks like you do!
Kel83 : Who do you think will win Shattered?

Dermot O’Leary : She's a very pretty girl, but she's a baby.

alavin : i fancy clare!

Dermot O’Leary : I’m almost 30 and I’m not single, more to the point.

chris2004 : and shes Cornish

Dermot O’Leary : To win, it’s too close to call. I hate to be a cop out but…

tedruxpsin : Cop out!

Dermot O’Leary : I’d be surprised if Chris did, given the state he is in.

Em S : you're too nice!! Chat Ed : Our time with DERMOT is almost up, so last few questions now...

Fangle : Dermot, what's the longest you've ever slept in one go?

Dermot O’Leary : I’m not a big sleeper really - 12 hours probably. I had a really good sleep after the 48 hours I had up, that was about 12hours.

Fish : who do you find the most interesting person to watch whilst sleep deprivated?

Dermot O’Leary : Good question. I suppose Chris in his current state, but overall Jimmy because he fluctuates.

a_hereinuk : and the longest you've stayed awake?
jackie : whats the longest you'ved stayed awake?

Dermot O’Leary : I did 50 hours in preparation – that’s my longest. NEVER again.

wats_the_point : ok a question arnet any of the contestants feelings any sexual urges?

Dermot O’Leary : We haven’t heard anything.

Hannah : kinky

Dermot O’Leary : But they are supposed to by now - they must be suppressing them.

Mummy : Do you think you will ever be as popular as Richard Whiteley?

Dermot O’Leary : We live in hope!

AndyM2033 : haha Chat Ed : That's it! Thanks for coming and talking to us DERMOT!

Katie : *waves to Dermot*
dermotsbabe : Good luck Dermot!

Dermot O’Leary : Byeeee!

dermy_lover : bye dermy
Sazzy : bye dude!
Quo Girl : bye dermot!!! sleep well!!!
