Chat Ed : Welcome to our Scrapheap Challenge live chat with the Barley Pickers team!
Barley Pickers : Hello everyone! Barley Pickers here! Ready for your questions...
input : hi
Carla : Hiya :-)
pmr : hello
Barley Pickers Rule! : hi
Dadnson : HI BP's
Chris : Hey guys - shame about the slight miscalculation - loved the 'machine' anyway - thanks for the entertainment
Barley Pickers : Cheers, Chris.
SimonM : How did you get to go on the show and did YOU choose your own design or were they chosen for you
Barley Pickers : We practically chose our own design. They gave us ideas, but we had a lot of input into it. We got onto the show by being conned into it by Keith on the basis that we didn't think we'd hear anything after we'd sent in the video explaining how a combine harvester works (in a very basic manner - farmer style).
will j : why do you have the name''barley pickers?
Barley Pickers : We all grow barley and we do a little bit of combining, so growing barley was the main denominator between us, so we thought we'd call ourselves the Barley Pickers!
Notata Dignum : Barley Pickers: How gutted were you when the trebuchet broke???
dan_the_v8man : how did it feel when the catapult self destructed
Barley Pickers : We were a little bit gutted, but none of us knew anything about what we were doing and it was wood and we don't like wood, we like iron! Something heavy! We did make a model at home out of metal and that worked. Wood is bad news as far as we're concerned. Next time we'll make one out of steel and it'll work.
Proper Jobber : me and my mates think that there might of been a hair line crack in the rod what did u think happened
Barley Pickers : The release chain snagged on the arm and the arm took off at great speed, that's what stopped it dead. If we had used something less like a chain, either a strap or a rope, then it would have worked, no doubts at all and it would have been a proper job.
noodle : what do you think of the catalysts?
Barley Pickers : Tremendous team. Very good sports. If they had come second to us they would have been just as pleased as we were to come second to them. They came across as a little arrogant on previous shows, but in real life they're not really.
PSeddon : What do you do when you're not picking barley or trying to chuck minis 30 feet into the air?
Barley Pickers chuckle
Barley Pickers : Wandering around in wellies, driving tractors and drinking lots of Scrumpy and in between then we mend an odd tractor or too.
pilgrim : well done guys you are a credit to the west country and have a great sense of humour too
edward crooks : What was the best part in being in Scapheap?
Barley Pickers : Well you've got to have a sense of humour to be a farmer, pilgrim - proper job! The best part was lots of alcohol!
Barley Pickers laugh
Barley Pickers : No, really, the crew were tremendous. Lisa's a nutcase. Robert was brilliant. We made a lot of really good friends. We're still chatting weekly with the teams that we've competed against. All the rest of the teams have been very gallant losers and they could have won just as easily as we did.
Jonny_Fenny : whats the greatest machine you have ever built on the show
Barley Pickers : Robin enjoyed the digger the most. We understood that the most, but the battleship was bloody good fun! It was nice to be a load of straw-chewing farmers who beat the boys on their own ground, even if it was more luck than judgement.
Andrew : Is Robert as funny as he seems or funnier?
Barley Pickers : Funnier. He's far funnier than he seems. One day we were sat waiting for a problem to sort itself out and we almost had to have a clean pair of pants when he finished he was so funny. He has tremendous off the cuff wit.
Proper_jarb : why is it a coicidence that there is always the equiptment required for the machine that is going to be built, i have never seen a boat, a bag of elastic etc. do they get the required materials in before recording the show?
Barley Pickers laugh
Barley Pickers : You cannot expect anybody to build something if you've got no materials to work with, to give us a fair chance there has to be a certain amount of help. There are a lot of things that we could have done with that weren't there. Nobody can work miracles, can they?
Martin : How did you move thast massive frame from yard to site?
Barley Pickers : It was totally dismantled and hauled on a lorry and then re-built back on the site, which took a horrendous amount of effort. We didn't half work hard doing that.
dan_the_v8man : are u gunna be in next years series?
Barley Pickers : If they'll let us, we'll be there! But I suspect they've seen too many proper jobs this year and I doubt they could take much more!
readie : propa job!!!!
Barley Pickers : But we'll still be waiting, by the phone, 24 hours a day.
Ben- : Do you have anything in particular against Mini's, or would you have tried to throw any car they'd given you?
Barley Pickers : We have got nothing against Minis. Jaguars would have been the best things. But they seemed to think they were a bit too heavy Gary's Jaguar would have been great to use, with Gary in it!
Barley Pickers laugh
Barley Pickers Rule! : lol
HMS Proper Job : What happens to the machines after the show?
Mart : lol
Barley Pickers : They're stuck in the scrapyard until we can get our hands on them. The Mud Monster we're going to use for spraying, the easy rider for carrying milk, the digger we're going to use to clear some ditches, the boat - Robin's got a huge slurry pit that he's going to put some pigs in and when we're getting a bit short of wood for the fire we'll go and get the trebuchet.
country folk : is the scrpyard as magical as it seems?
Barley Pickers : Oooh yes. Treeeemendous. We had a terrifically hard job to stop Robin from taking half of it home, He had his eyes on most of it.
Eco : which was the most difficult challange, and did you get on with the TC's??
Barley Pickers : We got on well with every single TC. The most difficult challenge was the boat.
Dave2002 : you were up against boat builders after all
Barley Pickers : We were used to building something heavy and weighty and we couldn't do that with the boat. So I suppose you could say we were in above our heads and I can't swim and nor can Keith very well!
Black Knight : lol
Barley Pickers nod at Dave2002.
The Mellor boyz : did you have mecano when you were kidzs
Barley Pickers : Yeah, we all did. We never knew what to do with it. But we all had them. If you come over here you can have it, it's all still in boxes.
Adam101 : Which team would you most like to face next year?
Barley Pickers : All of them! Except one.
Barley Pickers laugh
Barley Pickers : There were 4 out of the 5 teams that we'd go back and compete against again.
country folk : if you could build anything in scrapheap what would you build?
Barley Pickers : Combine harvester without a doubt and we'd go and pick some barley AND we'd do a proper job! And we'd build a tractor-trailer too.
scrapheap buddy : did any of you lot get injured on the show at all?
Barley Pickers : Yeah, Keith nearly got injured. He was pulling a piece of iron out of the heap and an RSJ nearly came and hit him. Good job he didn't get injured though because we couldn't have done it without him. We wouldn't have found anything to work with.
stephen lewis : what happens now after all your fame?
Barley Pickers : We get recognised in the street, we do a few autographs and Robin has had fan mail! I suppose we shall disappear into oblivion in about 2 weeks when everyone has forgotten about us. We’ll all just wander around chewing straw like we did before.
jdws : oh no you wont
noodle : Properr Jobbb!
chamisra : PROPERRRRRRRRR JOBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!!!!!
jdws : well done any way great entertainment keep the british flag flyin
Devon Dumpling : prooooooooooooooper jooooob
Barley Pickers : Thank you all for coming in to see us. Thanks to the crew too and to Robert and Lisa. Thanks for watching too and supporting us. I hope you enjoyed watching the series as much as we have making it and if anyone wants a trebuchet made we're the boys to come and see! One day we'll make one that works!
garysweb : hooray for barleys!!
country folk : DEVON RULES!!!
readie : well dun lads propa job
Happycloudofhappines : Marry me!!
properjob : thanks for all the laughs!!!
