Salvage Squad - Axel, Jerry and Claire

We spoke to the squad after they had restored the 1931 Morgan Super Sports three-wheeler!

Chat Ed : Welcome to this evening's SALVAGE SQUAD chat with Jerry, Axel and Claire! Say hello to our guests!

Claire : Hello everyone!

Axel : Hi, hope everyone enjoyed tonight's show.

Carla : Hiya :-)
Danny : hello squad
jord : hheello!!!!!!!!!!

Jerry : Good evening, anybody fancy a Morgan then?

Jason : Hi
Matt : Hello guys
Josh : Are you trained engineers or skilled enthusiasts? (what are your day jobs?)
Razorblade : That Morgan was beautiful. Good Job
GaryM : Yet another brilliant episode and a beautiful car!

Jerry : I'm a self taught engineer. Day job is journalist.

Axel : Same for me, with a little help from friends.

Claire : I've got an MSc in Conservation and Industrial Heritage. So this is my day job.

Jerry : (smarty pants!)

Matt : What a great day job!
SHRUBBERY : How did you get involved with the programme???
Slim : How did the team get together?

Claire : They phoned up the museums I worked in and asked if there were any women mechanics there, I said no and my boss said yes.

Axel : Mine was through a friend and lots of luck.

Jerry : I was working for a heritage magazine and they phoned me and asked me if I knew anybody that would be interested in doing it.

Matt : How long does it take to make a series? Some of the restorations must take many months to complete

Jerry : Well over 6 months, Matt, it's a logistical nightmare!

Axel : Don't try this at home!

Kev : Do you have any projects that you couldnt finish>?
nigel : to you all what has been the longest job that under took?

Claire : The Gypsy Moth in the last series and the 1870 ploughing engine in this series.

roz : Which one was the best? Its got to be the Morgan or Gallopers 4 me?
tom_r_p : What has been your favourite restoration?
Niall : What's ben the most fun thing u have ever restored?

Claire : The 1870 ploughing engine and I want one!

Jerry : I want the Morgan, but I don't fit in one!

Axel : The crane for me but my garage isn't big enough. That's next week's show.

MarkT : Is there, or has there been, anything where the idea of trying to restore it fills you with dread?

Claire chuckles
Claire : Halfway through the projects I have that feeling of dread.

Jerry : Normally when one of the producers or researchers comes to us and said we've got this really good... that's when we get worried.

jordan : What would be the one thing you would love to restore given the chance?
MarkT : Given the choice, what would be your ideal machine/vehicle to restore?

Claire : A big stationary steam engine - and I mean BIG!

Axel : An ocean liner!

Claire : Yes, we're going to restore the Titanic.

Jerry : A c type Jaguar - any offers?

Kat : Axel, thank you for the post card it is cool !! are you going to do another sieres??
dave 100 : will there be a third series
raymond : hi, how long do you guys and gals intend on making the salvage squad? (so how many series can we expect?)

Axel : Thanks for watching and it was a pleasure sending the card. We hope to get a third series but we don't know yet.

Jerry : We'll make Salvage Squad for as long as you want to watch it.

Claire : Yeah, it's a dream job.

john wickham : Who decides which projects to tackle?
Dale Who : How do you submit a target for the Salvage Squad to look at?

Claire : You can submit through the Salvage Squad website. Or write to Wall to Wall TV.

Davo : Excellent series chaps and chapesses
gus : Do you think the programs are techincal enough. Didn't see much inside the engine that Jerry just restored.

Jerry : We can't show you everything. We filmed 50 hours on the Morgan programme alone.

Claire : Actually it was probably about 100 hours.

Jerry : Yes, so we'd love to show you all of it, but you'd all get bored and switch off.

robertf : Does Suggs get more involved than Lee did?
Razorblade : What's Suggs' most annoying habit? Does he get in the way on the repairs sometimes? ;)

Claire : His most annoying habit is turning up late at night and going 'So how's it going chaps!?'

Jerry : And turning up late at night and NOT bringing beer!

Axel : Suggs is a sweetheart!

Claire : Ooh creep!

RobM : Have you ever considered doing a slavage squad special? You could take on something amazing and spread it over a few episodes!
stewfishing123 : What is the most exotic place you have ever been to to do a restoration?

Claire : We went to the Isles of Scilly which was fantastic and very beautiful - but we spent a day and a half in the town dump.

Jerry : Yes we have RobM, we're just waiting for the right project to come up.

MonkeyMagic : When does the uncut DVD of knuckle scraping and cursing that gets edited out of the 8pm show come out?
Richard Howe : How many mistakes are cut from the show?

Axel : You've missed all the copies - they've gone already!

Claire : I'd like to point out that a lot of boring but hard work is cut out… and my swearing!

Matt : We know Jerry does most of the swearing!!!

Jerry : Listen to the transcript of the dustbin lorry episode - I don't say one word!

KrankShaft : Claire's a babe, by the way!!! All the team are great though, and seem MUCH better on the TV this series-more comfortable with it perhaps?
Razorblade : Have you become good friends because of the series?

Axel : We get on a lot better now because we are warming to each other more. The more we work together, the more we get on.

Jerry : Yes, I haven't attacked Axel with a spanner for some weeks now.

Steve_e : Does Jerry still think the Dustbin lorry wasn't worth restoring?

Jerry : Ohh blimey!

Gary : The faces that Suggs makes sum up what you're all thinking during the dust-cart episode ;o)

Jerry : Grudgingly - I suppose it has its place in history, but then so does syphilis

Greg : oooh!
Darent Valley Light : Who do you prefer, lee Evans or Suggs?

Jerry : We like Lee Evans' brand of comedy very much but then again we've never worked with him, it was Lee Hurst!

Dappey : do you believe that everything should get a second chance-no matter how beat up it is?

Axel : Yes totally.

Jerry : No.

Claire : No.

Jerry : Some things have just gone too far.

Claire : Yes you have to think seriously about it.

Jerry : It's not a case of economics either, sometimes it's just a case of impossibility.

Matt : Some things shouldn't have been made in the first place!!

Axel : Look how close we are ; )

Jerry : Yeah, we agree on everything don't we!

Dappey : fight fight fight!!!
jonathan : axel what is your favoret tool?

Claire : It's a hammer!

Axel : Yeah, the bigger the better! And then a gas axe.

Claire : That's mine!

bigalan : Who scratched the Bristol bonnet >????????

Axel laughs

Jerry : They still remain tight-lipped.

gasket : axle do you ever miss with the hammer and hit the project

Axel laughs

Claire : He's hit me a couple of times!

Jerry : Yeah, but that was deliberate.

Axel : No, I've got a very good eye.

Jeremy : We're restoring an old moped and want to get the frame powder coated. It's been blast cleaned and now has a few holes in it. What can we fill the holes with that will withstand the heat of the powder coat oven? Can we use lead or plastic filler?

Jerry : No, get it professionally looked at - VERY IMPORTANT - because a frame is structural on a moped. Seek professional advice, I can't stress that highly enough.

Axel : And shop around.

Alan : Axel - did you have to learn the 'thumb-over' crank technique the hard way? I did... nearly broke my bloody thumb first time!

Axel : When I was younger yes, I did learn the hard way.

KrankShaft : Does Claire come across any sexist attitudes, given that nuts and bolts restoration is usually seen as a male area?

Jerry : Why would she - she's just a girl!?

Claire : Yes, but I give as good as I get.

monique : do you keep in touch with the people whose vehicles etc you restore?

Claire : Yeah some of them. At the Dorset steam fair I was driving around in several of them.

Axel : I saw the Bristol the other night too.

Dale Who : What do you consider to be the best part of restoring all these pieces to their former glory?

Axel : The end result.

Jerry : The look on the owners face.

Claire : Finding part of its history buried under tonnes of paint.

Robert123 : do you ever go and visit the people you restored vehicles
rvsjimbo : Are you going to revisit any projects to see how they're still working?

Claire : No plans to yet.

Jerry : There are plenty more fresh projects out there.

Chat Ed : That's it! Thanks for coming and talking to us Jerry, Axel and Claire!

Razorblade : I loved the Dustbin lorry! It was cute!
Darent Valley Light : Well done on your projects!
