Salvage Squad - Axel, Jerry and Claire

Axel, Jerry and Claire joined us in chat and gave us some top restoration tips.

Chat Ed : Here they are - welcome Axel, Claire and Jerry everyone!

Axel : Can't wait for your questions. Fire away :)

Jerry : Fire away chaps.

Claire : Hello!

Chat Ed : Righto, let's dive right in:
Zany : Claire I have to say I admire you extremely, it must be really hard to put up with those three men!

Claire laughs
Claire : It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it!

Agent Z : Who exactly DID make that scratch? :))
Gordon : So who really DID scratch the car??
darkwood : did you fix the scratch?

Jerry : Keiran, I cannot tell a lie!!!

Guy Adams : What do you mean by 2 weeks for a full restoration, surley there must have been outside help, im a classic car restorer by trade and each of our cars takes around 6 months!

Axel : We had a certain amount of preparation. There was, for instance, it going away for a re-spray. However everything you saw, we did. Flat out, lots of hours, you know the score.

Jontee : Who paid for the work on all these projects? i.e. did the owners contribute anything or was this a freebies for them?

Axel : We can't disclose the financial details of each project - we're sorry.

Delorean : I don't understand why you left the engine until last. Surely that would be the starting point but you seemed to spend most of the time on the bodywork!

Jerry : The bodywork needed the most doing and we knew the engine was a runner. Plugs and points saw it right.

randolf : Did you replace all hoses, cables, etc, etc to original specs, or were they all there? In other words, how many corners were ccut?

Jerry : Very few corners were cut. We even avoided Taiwanese hose clips in favour of the 'Jubilee' type.

adam littler : I found tonights show fascinating as i have a great love for classic cars. I did some body work on an old Rover and was wondering what tips you had for sorting out deep pitted rust on the sills of cars, a problem inherent with many Rover cars.

Claire : Pits that are too deep, cut out and weld in replacements. For light pitting use a proprietory rust remover or any rust left will re-appear. Many of my cars have suffered like that.

billy Dale : can u tell me axel how did u get the engine compartment so clean & wot did u use

Axel : That was a steam-clean and lots of hard work. Everybody got their hands dirty, even down to toothbrushes and Claire even chipped her nail polish!

Claie laughs

Jerry : Ooh!

Zany : Before salvaging most of the stuff on the show do you research into it ?

Claire : Always. The preparation is everything. When you start to undo something you always find 109 things wrong but the preparation allows you to get over that. Research is always interesting too.

CumbriaClassicCoache : How did you find the vehicles you are restoring?

Axel : Word of mouth, friends of friends and specialist magazines.

1943 chevrolet : has anything got broken that you cannot replace or that has stopped you going to a show ?

Jerry : Not yet but the windscreen very nearly did for us. Watch next week too! Too close to call!

james : any good places to find classic parts for classic cars?

Claire : Bewley Auto Jumble and I love "Speedy Spares" in Brighton. They're fantastic.

David Reed : I noticed that on the steam roller that the nuts & bolts were numbered, why is ths?

Jerry : To absolutely ensure that they are re-assembled with the correct nut in the correct bolt.

Claire : It's sound engineering practice.

Axel : No two bits are ever the same either, are they, because they were hand-made.

adambrown : have you actually had to strip an engine in any of the restoring?

Jerry : Yes, the Gipsy Moth engine. See upcoming shows.

kev : Kev/What about all the chrome work? There was no mention of how that was restored

Claire : That was re-dipped.

Axel : Chrome plating is a very poisonous process and so it had to be professionally re-finished.

Alan Rogers : Are you going to do a motorbike - great programme by the way!
Cenker : Are there any plans to 'Salvage Squad' a boat in the series?

Claire : Yes, we're doing a 1906 Thames barge and after that a motorbike would be fantastic, but we haven't got one in this series. If anybody out there has got a very, very early motorcycle we could consider it. I'm thinking 1899. Log on to the website and let us know - http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/S/salvage_squad

Delorean : I want to get started in car restoration. Is there any car you would suggest is good for a beginner. Like a Mini suppose?

Claire : Not a Mini as they can be full of rust. A Triumph Herald or a Spitfire would be great.

Madmark90 : Which project was the most rewarding for you personally?

Axel : The steam-roller was the most rewarding. But also quite challenging is the steam launch Jane - watch this space.

Loopy_Lu : My Dad has a 1966 Hillman Minx. It's body work is is poor repair and the engine has seen far better days. Is there anything that can be done to save her?

Jerry : Alas, I fear nothing. Remember the good times and give her a dignified funeral.

Hugo Brent : My Dad has a 407 Bristol Exactly the Same as you were restoring today, he has also one ths Bristol Competition that you worked for today.Anyway, he has this Bristol in Pieces and what tips could you give him if he were to start restoring it himself?

Axel : Get it into that garage now and start methodically working through and enjoy it! (lucky Dad).

phillip : Have you ever restored something to see it go into a museum?

Claire : Yes a fire engine. I also work for a museum.

Chat Ed : OK, we're nearly at the end of our half hour now, so here are the last couple questions:
Cenker : Will you be publishing 'Tips on Salvages' from the series?

Jerry : No plans for a book yet, but it would be nice. Publishers please call me!

David Reed : how about doing an out-takes program?

Claire : We could fill hours, with class swearing alone!

Axel : It would be full of beeps.

Jerry : I'm sure plenty will get onto the bleepers and bloomers show.

Chat Ed : And the last question, a very popular one...
dave : will there be another series
Matthew : Is there going to be another series of 'Salvage Squad'?

Jerry : We hope so, fingers crossed.

Chat Ed : Thanks Claire, Jerry and Axel, that was great! Thanks everyone for being here :) Hope you enjoyed it.

Axel : Thanks very much.

Jerry : Keep watching, can I get back to the workshop and get on with my lathe now?>

sam crook : Bye!
Matthew : Thank you!, Bye
cbass : bye claire i really like you
james digriz : thanks 4 your time
1943 chevrolet : bye keep up the good work

Axel leaves the room
Claire leaves the room
Jerry leaves the room
