Room for Improvement - Dave and Angus

Angus Purden and Dave Wellman - presenters of the afternoon DIY show, Room for Improvement, joined us for a webchat to help you out with your property questions...

Chat Ed : Welcome to this afternoon's 'Room for Improvement' chat with DIY gurus and presenters of the show - Angus and Dave…

juliewhitworth : hi
James P : dave u legend
rob : oi dave!
t : angus is the best
Monkey-Boy : does Angus smell?
t : is angus single?
Sarah : I'd like to know if Dave is single? I love him!

Angus : Hi guys! It's just me that showed up today... Dave who?

Dave : Hi everyone! Sorry I'm late!

Moraq : Hi!

Dave : I'm en route filming for Discovery.

Sam : We love Angus too
James P : you guys are an awesome duo

Dave : Yes he does smell - very nice! And as for being single… not sure.

Angus : Depends on the weather. Perhaps I've just me the love of my life. A millionaire!

Dave : I'm so sorry Sarah but I'm very much attached and I have a three-year old daughter.

Angus : He has a beautiful lady who always looks after me very well and cooks me nice meals.

Dave : She cooks me more nice meals than you!

hetti : hi guys, I’m an architecture student and was just wondering what software you use for the visualisations at the start of the programme?
Hayley : Hi Angus and Dave, can you tell me what the brilliant looking design program is that you use on your laptop on the show?

Dave : It's a programme called SketchUp you can get a trial version at www.sketch3d.com

Zin : great show guys! I'm from Aust/Singapore/US and new to London, am a young designer trying to break into the industry, how did you guys start out and any tips or help for a newbie? thanks and I have to say, one of a few good home reno show around!

Angus : Ooh good man!

Dave : I got into television through a friend, he worked for Home Front on the BBC when it was a very journalistic programme, so I have him to thank for that. My advice is just keep badgering away at people and annoy them if you have to.

Angus : I got into TV through news, via some dodgy satellite channel. You only need two things to succeed in TV - passion and the willingness to lose your dignity.

Dave : Yeah I've lost a bit of that over the past couple of weeks, did you see me in my leotard?

Lesley Millar : We want to build an extension but just don’t know what to do first? Building Society re mortgage, estimate from Builder, Planning consent? HELP PLEASE

Dave : I would ascertain how much money you can spend because without that you don't know how far you can go. When you know how much you can spend, keep some by for a holiday afterwards, because you'll need it.

Angus : Always have a 10% contingency fund too and get a good architect to discuss your designs with. And make sure you get the correct planning consent, you just can't cut corners on that. And finally, get our approval! ;)

Mandy R : what do you look at when choosing the houses you decide to film???

Dave : We actually don't get too involved in the production, but it's very important during a series to have some very different projects.

Angus : We look for projects that have value for the viewer. All the hard work is done while Dave and I are travelling up and down the motorways in our Winnebago.

Jo : We are thinking of incorporating folding sliding doors into our new house extension but one supplier tells us they have a tendency to leek, what’s your experience of these doors?
martin : love the show

Dave : If the supplier tells you they have a tendency to leak, then don't use them as they obviously don't fit them properly. When fitted properly they work really well.

Angus : We've found they work very well. But make sure you shop around.

Robbo : I love Room For improvement but does Dave regret wearing that terrible blue lycra suit last week...!
Sarah : Damn, missed that one, Dave! How come they always make you do the silly stunts?
justin : dave, do you like all the dressing up you do, love that you’re game for a laugh!

Dave laughs. But of course! It was a bit embarrassing having the kind of people around me who were around me. I did say to the guys in the gym - I've got the right weight but it's just not all in the right places.

Angus : That made my mum blush.

Emma : Hi Guys! What are your own houses like? and how long have you been in the extension trade?

Dave : My house is nearing completion but I've been in it a long time, it's been a long project - it was knackered when I bought it.

Mandy R : dave has a downstairs lo

Angus : I've got a funky little bachelor pad in Notting Hill, which I have renovated very quickly in the last two months, unlike Dave. For me it's location over size. But I still have a mortgage that will probably see me living in a Sainsbury's trolley in a few years time.

Yazz : Why do only kitchen extensions and lofts? it is getting bit boring & samee. Can't you do remodelling of whole flat or something?

Angus : We have! You haven't been watching the whole series - shame on you!

Dave : We've done swimming pools, garden rooms, hot tubs and gazebos, bicycle parking areas, an orangery… We've covered the ground alright. The programme, being a daytime show, is all about small projects. The idea, when we first started, was to make a much more achievable version of Grand Designs.

Sarah : I saw the orangery one... the place that you showed them was amazing. I'd like one of those wine coolers myself.
Iron Maiden : has there ever been any shows that have been a complete disaster?

Angus : You had a near disaster didn't you Dave?

Dave : Nicki and Tony in Croydon had a bit of a problem with their garden room - the design was slightly wrong and too high so it was quite tough. The builder sorted everything out in the end though. The only thing that could be disastrous for us is if they don't finish the project before the end of the series.

Jo : We were turned down by grand designs because we were extending not new build, interested?
Christine Mitchell : HELP - How do we get our house considered for your programme??
Lorraine : How do u get onto ur really informative programme?

Angus : Write to RDF Media, their details are on their website www.rdfmedia.com. It’s always good for the people taking part to have bubbly, good personalities. If you get in there early, at the beginning of the series, then you have more chance of getting on, but we've not been told if there is another series yet.

alison : I have an old house with too many small rooms, it has been extended twice should I extend again or tumble?

Dave : It's weather you CAN extend again. There are limits, in which case it might be worth re-designing the interior, by knocking two rooms into one you may be decreasing the value of your house. Sometimes if you do have a lot of smaller rooms it might enhance the property if you knock it into one big area though.

Angus : If you love the property do what YOU want with it, especially if you're planning to stay there.

orla : Hi luv the show. need some advice on open plan living space. I need to open up my kitchen living room for the use of a wheelchair, a busy student and two very active kids. unfortunately I have two steps to the garden and side entrance. Is it worthwhile lowering floors without devaluing property?

Dave : Depends on the make up of the floors, but surely if it's a wheelchair access problem there should be grants for that kind of thing? Open plan living, although it sounds inviting, can be prohibitive because of fire regulations.

pj : Hi Dave & Angus i'am having a two storey extension done on the side of my house, had plans drawn up & submitted. On average how long would i have to wait for planning permission to be accepted.

Dave : 6-8 weeks normally, and if any of your neighbours question it then it can roll on from there.

Pud : Thanks for the tip on sun tubes! I had one fitted last Friday, what’s the tip on condensation in a conservatory? Please Please Please answer, thanks very much

Dave : Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation!

Angus : They tend to be cold in the winter and warm in the summer - try and get your blinds in with the price of the conservatory. To be honest these days though you should not have issues with condensation if the supplier fits them correctly.

Saz : If you could redesign each other’s houses what would you do? Xx

Angus : I'd knock his down!

Dave : I'd have to build another flat on top of it so that he could have another bedroom for when I come round.

Angus : Or I could always ask Dave for a direct exchange ;)

Dave runs off!

nae : I am looking into a career in interior design is it hard work ?

Angus : Ooh I'm not an interior designer but having worked with them it's very, very hard and very competitive, but if you have a talent you'll succeed. Also if your genetic make up allows you to create scatter cushions then you're already halfway there!

sassie : Angus, what design feature should you not be without in a kitchen?

Dave : A sink!

Angus : For me at the moment it would be a Smeg fridge.

Karen : i hope there is another series for the show because i think that you two are great!!! u make me laugh a lot. i come in from college and watch ur show straight away.
hetti : can you two spare any time to come to mine for tea and biscuits?

Dave : Brilliant Karen, bless you. Hetti we'd love to!

daves hair : angus, where can i buy a nice salmon coloured jumper from?

Angus : Normally my jumpers are donated, send them in!

Yazz : Angus: Can I employ your services privately?

Angus : Ooh! Just name that price! Can I bring Dave for company?

Mandy R : Look forward to the next show and my eye candy thanks for the chat guys byeeeeee
Lorraine : Really good show. I like the hour length version best!
sass : Keep up the good work both of you, the show is great

Dave : Goodbye everyone and hopefully if we get another series we'll see you soon!

Angus : Thank you for watching, hopefully we'll be back, but in the meantime look out for both of us on different projects.
