Mr Big of Afghanistan
14 November 2006, 4:06 PM
Our security advisor, a former SAS soldier, has popped his head round the door to inform me cheerily that this hotel is under imminent threat of being bombed. Maybe I'm missing something, but THE ONLY proper hotel in the city centre would - I'd've thought -- be under permanent threat would it not?
I've always assumed the Talibs or every other person with a grievance, would want to have a go at this place. Suffice to say, lots of soldiers running around downstairs, men in unpleasant slacks-and-blazer combos with giveaway haircuts talking into their watches in American.
Well, let's relax a little and talk about tonight's main item from here. I don't know why he did it, but for some bizarre reason one of this country's biggest opium smugglers has allowed our camera to film his operation. And some film it is. If you ever wanted to know the reality behind all this rhetoric about the Afghan drug situation etc etc -- well this is it.
I guarantee you this, unless you happen to work yourself in the south Afghan opium business -- you will not, ever, have seen anything like this on TV. Forget Hollywood or UK drug-dramas -- this is the real thing. I shall say no more. Watch me adlibbing in Afghanistan here.

Hi, I'm a trainee journalist at Cardiff University, I'm researching an article on journalists abroad using blogs to cope with stressful situations and I was wondering if I could e-mail you some questions? Thanks.
