Band Of The Week: This Morning Call

Michael Baggs   11 January 2008, 12:02 PM

This Morning Call (In Lidl)

Is it too late to tip a band for success in 2008? Perhaps we should wait until Adele is crowned the more important person in music and then quietly suggest that This Morning Call are one of the most wonderful bands we have heard this year.

Mixing traditional indie balladry with the electronic quirks of geek-gods Hot Chip, This Morning Call draw a somber line between last year's crop of Coldplay identikits such as the unremarkable but perfectly pleasant Ghosts and the increasingly creative goings on in the electro scene.

Putting a quiet rocket under the traditional guitar band set-up, This Morning Call describe themselves as 'Portishead on anti depressants' although LCD Soundsystem with a hangover might be more appropriate - although a sense of bleak brilliance applies to both descriptions.

On their 4unsigned page you'll find three of This Morning Call's tracks. 'Deserted' throws climactic violins into the already genre blurring mix, 'Tides' relies on a catchy bass-line and uplifting choral vocal sampling while sweeping 'Clockworks' takes a more often trodden path of the almost-acoustic indie ballad. All of which have made the ease into the New Year of music a little easier...

Check out This Morning Call at 4unsigned.

Bob Marley believed that he could cure racism and hatred by injecting music and love into people's lives.... martin and mary believe that also, and this is reflected in their songs. www.maryandmartin.com www.myspace.com/maryandmartin
