The wilds of indie filmmaking

Charlie Phillips   11 January 2008, 6:02 PM

Peter Broderick is a good man - his site may look lo-fi (and even a bit bland) but there's independent filmmaking gold in them there paragraphs.

Broderick

In particular, take a peek at his Distribution Bulletins which are no-nonsense short to-the-point thoughts on how to get your films to the world totally by yourself - or more accurately, by making your own networks of brothers and sisters doing it by themselves.

I patricularly recommened his recent analysis of how you can learn from Radiohead's self-release of their latest record. Lots of people have waffled about it (including me) but he gives you the practical lessons - which are totally intuitive.

In essence, he says control your distribution yourself, but don't get too crazy - mix both 'new' and 'old' methods of getting films out and you'll be on a good path, as well as inspiring others. And after all, you'll definitely be doing a worthy experiment for others to learn by even if it doesn't completely work...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
