The Choice: Abortion documentary

Becca Frankel   13 May 2008, 4:30 PM

200 000 women have abortions in this country every year, yet it's something that women rarely admit to.  Tonight's sensitive BBC documentary The Choice, shows us several women (of course of different ages, class and cultural backgrounds) talking candidly about their abortion experiences.  It also follows one woman through the decision to have one, and how she handles it afterwards (she withdraws from filming).

It's directed by Ursula Macfarlane, who also did Breaking Up with the Joneses.  She was attracted to the subject because it deals with "life and death and family."  What I found shocking when I saw her talk about the making of the film at a recent Q and A, was the fact that only 1 doctor from the Marie Stopes clinic would agree to appear.  All the other medical staff where fearful of what their families and neighbours may think if they saw them, which is perhaps indicative of the larger than imagined role that religions plays in people's lives in this country.  Abortion is currently legal up to 24 weeks in this country.

The Choice, BBC2 tonight, 9pm

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
