Post-Easter update

Charlie Phillips   25 March 2008, 2:39 PM

Invisible Woman
Welcome back to work and/or play, one and all. Don't forget that all this week, you can watch FourDocs on 3 Minute Wonder and revel in the greatness of such brilliant home-baked short documentaries getting shown on TV.

But there's more news to update you on. I've been on a bit recently about the Cinema Eye Awards - rather than give you a belated precis of what happened and who won, why not get straight to the post-show griping in the States? That's the fun bit, after all. So, indiewire briefly lists some funny things people said like "We Want to be Farmers. Then We'd Get Subsidies" which tickled me, though I'm more with Germaine Greer on that train of thought - whilst waiting at the subsidy bus stop, why not make a good film anyway to pass the time?

The POV blog also links to some interesting opinions on the awards and the docs world, with some good suggestions for where it could go next and moving the discussion on to point out that it isn't just docs that don't get seen enough by the public, it's most great low-budget films, and that is a big problem.

Then there's discussion on The Reeler of the dodgy feeling Billy The Kid gives you along with a list of the awards and a wry take on the general (and literal) song and dance at the awards, including a link to a review of B the K which I have a lot of empathy with.

Anyway, let's move on, and where better than to HotDocs which is probably the world's biggest documentary festival and happens next month. You can save yourself a trawl through the website and take some hints here. I especially want to see Dreams With Sharp Teeth which apparently got a lot of scarf-waving at SXSW, and Steypa, which just looks crazy, and has a man dressed as a panda in it. That will do me fine. And obviously Errol Morris' Standard Operating Procedure too, just because you know...you should.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
