Long Horn Jim goes to the abbatoir

Charlie Phillips   18 March 2008, 4:09 PM

Killing Floyd

Those of you who've been following the progress of Long Horn Jim and his rare-breed cows and have grown attached to the mooing ladies and gents might like to be a bit cautious upon watching the latest installment, Killing Floyd.

Obviously, we've seen in other episodes the evidence that Jim's cows have a certain destiny, but this episode really hammers that home in graphic detail. Now, I'm a pretty committed veggie so these sorts of things aren't my favourite to see, but actually, as abattoirs go, this isn't a terrible one. And in truth, I'd rather people were totally aware of how their food got to them even if they then decide that meat-eating doesn't pose a problem for them, so seeingclose-up the process of a scared cow being shot in the head is an extremely worthwhile documentary endeavour in my eyes.

Plus it's a superb documentary, just like all the Jim films - watch them all together I say, and you'll understand small-scale farming way more than you did before. And as Patrick says in his comments, this isn't warts-and-all just in the sense of seeing killing, it's also comprehensive in conveying a sense of the bureaucracy, fear and sheer process of raising and killing cows in Britain in the early 21st century. A rare breed of FourDoc indeed.
