Hot docs and new talent in Edinburgh

Becca Frankel   26 June 2008, 7:34 PM

Hello - I'm just back from Edinburgh International Film Festival, moved to June for the first time to escape the manic whirl that is Edinburgh at the height of August when every other arts festival is happening.  I met filmmakers, saw shorts, and watched a whole host of documentaries.  These included the 'big' ones - Sundance double winner Man on a Wire and Errol Morris' Standard Operating Procedures, the poetic Sleep Furiously - Gideon Koppel's homage to his Welsh hometown which he'll be writing about on FourDocs, and my personal favourite and new obsession - Mechanical Love.  This superbly crafted doc is about relationships and robots, androids and aching loneliness and love, and our difficulty in accepting the uncanny (which is when something is so close to something we know, we can't accept it as either distinctively different or as the same.  It's a peculiarly human headache of a phenomenon.)  The film is set in a Japanese lab and Norwegian old age home, and i am recommending it highly highly highly!

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
