All White in Barking

Becca Frankel   14 March 2008, 8:58 AM

Tonight is the closing film for the BBC's season on white identity in Britain today, against awash of multicultural issues being aired.  Marc Isaccs film All White in Barking is a tapestry about people living next door to each other in Barking, where the BNP are gaining votes every day.  This film was a big passion project for Marc, and it's evident.  We see the filmmaker at his best - gently prodding characters and devising situations to bring out the humour of the situation, whilst knowing when to step back and let them contradict themselves.  I'm going to write more about it next week, and would love to know what you think of it.  The reviews have been really positive, but there has also been discussion as to whether the premise for the season was perhaps misplaced, and purposefully controversial, rather than 'brave'.  What do you think?

Ohh, and look out for my name in the credits - i did a lot of door knocking and character interviewing for the film in my life pre-FourDocs.

All White in Barking, BBC2, 9pm tonight

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
