Santa's Ghetto

1 December 2006, 3:55 PM

By Ruth Brown

Santa's Ghetto offers an unusual break from the shopping hell that is Christmas time on Oxford Street. Organised by online gallery picturesonwalls.com, this is the fifth Santa's Ghetto to showcase and sell the work of underground artists, but the first to be held in this prime shopping mecca position.

-----------------------------------------------------------____________
This reincarnation of Hansel and Gretel, in which Michael Jackson assumes the role of witch, luring the children into his house with a candy cane, is a Banksy collaboration.

And, although Banksy is undoubtedly pulling in the punters - one conversation overheard involved a customer desperate to know if there was a secret tip-off email list he could be added to in order to snag a Banksy when it came in - there are only a few of his pieces on show, one of which will be raffled off for a pound a ticket.

There's lots more to see besides: Modern Toss - illustrations as seen in the Guardian newspaper and on the Channel 4 TV series - prints are going for £25, and there's stuff by Simon Munnery, Ian Stevenson and Space Invader, too.

Santa's Ghetto is at 15 Oxford Street, right next to Tottenham Court Road tube.
