Reed revisits old material
29 June 2007, 12:00 AM
Lou Reed took his own walk on the wild side when he wrote Berlin in 1973. The album came a year after his definitive and most successful album Transformer propelled him to stardom.
But Berlin differed greatly from its critically acclaimed predecessor. It was a collection of deeply personal songs detailing the downward spiral of a drug addict and his prostitute girlfriend wrapped in an opera of jealousy and violence all set in what was then the seedy decadence of Berlin.
Reed reportedy regarded the album as his masterpiece but some critics called it the most depressing album ever made.
It was universally panned by the critics and disappeared never to be seen again - until now.
This weekend marks a watershed for him personally and for many of his fans as he performs this lost work in Manchester and London for the first time.
