Cannes round-up

We started off with the grand opening - red carpets, glamour, and exclusive parties on the beach: the Cannes film festival is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in style.
This year's jury is chaired by British director Stephen Frears - who'll take charge of choosing the coveted Palme d'Or. But that's where the British involvement grinds to a halt - with no home-grown films in the official competition. Watch Nick's report here.

Yesterday Nick reported on the film about the life of US journalist Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan five years ago. The film, A Mighty Heart, starring Angeline Jolie as Pearl's widow Mariane, has attracted critical acclaim.

The film was adapted by British director Michael Winterbotham from Mariane's harrowing memoir, which she wrote to introduce her son to the father he would never meet. You can watch the report here.

Also hailed at the festival was the new movie about Joy Division front man Ian Curtis, who took his own life at the age of 23. Control is the first movie directed by Anton Corbin, a veteran of rock photography who immortalised U2 on the cover of their Joshua Tree album.

Curtis himself is played by the unknown actor Sam Riley, whose resemblance to the singer landed him the part. Watch Nick's report here.

And it wouldn't be Cannes without a touch of controversy; Michael Moore's latest controversial film 'Sicko', a documentary about the American healthcare system, could be seized by US authorities before it's even released.

The US treasury is investigating whether its longstanding trade and travel embargo with Cuba was broken during the making of the film. Find out more in our report here.

We also took a look at the other side of Cannes from movie director strops to high wire props, via the traumas, the tantrums, the trysts as the famous film-fest reaches its sixtieth birthday.

Whilst it's renowned for premieres - Cannes also allows the world to get a unique behind the scenes glimpse of the movie world. Take a look here.
