The boat from Manaus to Barcelas.

Tomas Leach   28 December 2006, 4:03 PM

We ended up legging it to catch the boat. We had to take two taxis to collect our stuff and to make it to the docks.
It was dark when we got on the boat, which left at its own leisurely pace, an hour after it was meant to. Its called the Katatal and when we are finally on deck and the lights of the shore are shining back at us, we all get giddily excited. We are about to catch a boat up the Rio Negro, tributary of the Amazon. We will sleep in hammocks and eat below. We will arrive in Barcelas whenever the boat makes it.

The docks were the slum areas we had filmed before. Open garbage and kids flying kites. We had taken a lot of polaroids and given them to the kids when we were here before. They liked them so much they ended up taking the negative backs too.

The hope had been that we would get more than one story on the boat itself. We'd made a deal with the boat captain that we could film with him, but seeing the size of the boat and how small it was, we knew that we would only get one story.
I think we are on track with our story finding, even if their is that slight panic at the back of the brain that none of the stories will mean anything and we will come back with glorified travel videos.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
