Soy Capitan, Soy Capitan.

Tomas Leach   30 December 2006, 10:31 AM

The boat captain is quite a simple guy. He has no philosophies or theories that he wanted to expand on. No argument with his place in the world. He just wanted to make a bit more money and travel the Rio Negro. He was fairly subdued and I'm not so sure that he will make a great film... I only really liked the fact that he was wearing an Avril Lavigne t-shirt for the majority of the trip.

After we've filmed with him, it rains. A lot.

Maybe it's the stillness of this journey, but I'm feeling strongly that we need more things happening in the films. But how do we get that with the way we are approaching them? We dont have enough time to sit and wait for things to happen all the time and we need to make quick judgments with the characters.

I'm beginning to fear that these films will be too similar to some short documentaries I made for the Venice tourist board. Too generic. I really want Century to like these films. I think that might be my biggest worry. That Century don't like them at all. Or dont rate the way I've worked on them.

Ben and I talk about keeping looking for scenes, whole scenes that can build a narrative around the interview, even with the short structure of the 3MW's.

I think that I am particularly nervous about these films because they were one of my aims for the year. That they are happening in the Amazon is just additional excitement/tension/worry/pleasure/pressure. Most of it internal. The people around me couldn't be more supportive.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
