Shooting ratios and the arguments that ensue.

Tomas Leach   3 January 2007, 6:11 PM

Ben and I have a couple of beers whilst Leandro makes some phone calls.
We talk about shooting ratio. I'd like to be shooting less, but with more thought. More decisiveness about what the best shots are and the confidence to not repeat ourselves. I really don't like getting coverage for the sake of it and I hate shooting versions of things to choose later unless there are truly two meanings. I really believe we should shoot what we want in the best way we can and have the courage and conviction to shoot only that.

Of course, to do so, we need to be prepared, focused and clear. Both in our idea of what we are trying to achieve and in our opinion of how what is in front of us shows us that. What it means, what it says, what it feels like. It's something I believe strongly, but I must work on my communication, and perhaps most of all, my grace in telling people what I want to achieve.

We decide to round off the boat film with shots from the shore and from a smaller boat. We barter with the captain for 30 minutes of his time. I don't think I really grasped how much time we'd be on the water here. Which is a bit thick seeing as these films are about life in the Amazon.

We go to the beach across the river from Barcelas. The water is incredible. Hot and red in places, yellow in others. Soft sand at the bottom. Yellow butterflies chase each other in the sky. Leandro jokes that you only need to put a boy in there chasing them and europeans will go wild for the photo... Margins_book

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
