Pushing our luck

Tomas Leach   6 January 2007, 4:13 PM

A bit of tracking and a bit of waiting and we find the guy who can give us blessing to film with a bus driver. He gladly does so and sets up a driver to meet that evening.

The day has gone really well. We have one lovely film with Artur and contact to shoot the 7th tomorrow.
Perhaps pushing our luck, we try to find a cowboy too. The girl who helped us find the education secretary tries to introduce us to a farmer who might let us film on his land. He has not even the slightest mind to do so. Foreigners are not welcome. Mainly for our ignorance, bias and hypocrisy it seems. "If we are going to burn the whole forest, then were going to burn it all. At least it will be a Brazilian doing it".

I can sort of see his point. It's not something I wanted to make a film about directly, but who are we to say what Brazil does with it's land? We've destroyed most of our natural resources. What is our claim on the Amazon? What gives us the right to make judgements about it and the people working on it?

Later, we sit waiting at the education secretary's office waiting for our bus driver. He comes in and is much younger than I expected, which is great. Our films tend to balance towards the old and elderly and he will off set this nicely.
It's his generation who will shape the next 25 years of the Amazon.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
