Engine failure.

Tomas Leach   29 December 2006, 5:20 PM

Its been incredibly hot today, as we've made slow progress up river. We seem to have made friends with all of the kids on board, who seem amused by us. And like kicking us.

We've slowly been picking up bits and pieces that we want to have with the boat captain's film. All his family live on the boat with him, each doing a job, each slinging their hammock and sleeping when its not their turn to work. Included in the ticket are meals, served on the lower deck. It's more rice and beans, but it's hot and good. Most of the people on the boat are now thoroughly used to us being around with the camera. We've been filming since dawn, when the river looked like oil and the sunrise over the banks in the distance was stunning.

I've just about prepared myself for an interview with the captain as he drove the boat, when the engine started to really chug and the Katatal drifts into the near bank. The engine's broken.

We film an incredibly oily scene of two guys below trying to fix it, we film the drunk friend of the captain trying to weld and we film everyone else sitting around like they expected it. Then we wait. I try to pretend that the enormous hornets don't scare me. Ben shoots our average ratio per film on efforts to get the boat moving and Leandro lies in his hammock.

Eventually the engine kicks back into life and we move away. Ben and I carry on our chat from yesterday about how we approach the films. I want him to be more thoughtful in advance. We're trying to make these films both the best they can be and still something new for us. We argue this through often and provoke each other a bit. I think it keeps us thinking. I'd prefer to be constantly trying to improve what we are doing than settle.

Ben and I on the boat. With cables and sarcastic grins.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
