Documentary ideas ruined in minutes...

Tomas Leach   1 January 2007, 12:00 AM

This blog is a little strange. It's being written from my notes of making the films, after I've edited them, but in the present tense as they were notes at the time. And now I think the films will be on very soon...
Oh well.

I'm going to keep this hammock. I've written so much of this from it.

I have to skip the pages of numbers that should show how much everything has cost. And it has a tape we logged and talked about. And some phone numbers.

BARCELAS

It's searingly hot here.
This little town looks like a caribbean island. Colourful painted facades, people on bicycles, palm trees swaying. Someone described it as a paradise when we told of coming here. Across the bay there are beautiful beaches with wooden shacks.

We've come here to find a man we know is searching for El Dorado, the lost city of gold. Apparently he has an internet cafe now. At the info centre in town, the woman gives us as much info as we can possibly ignore about the picturesque places and local tribes we could visit. She tells us we can swim perfectly safely in the river as crocodiles are scared of us (just us?) and piranhas only attack if you are bleeding. I check my badly cut up legs and get a bit distracted checking i dont have any tropical diseases.
I'd wanted to do a film about diving. But she says that "not even Jacques Cousteau could dive here, he tried!" with some glee.
The water is just too dark.
The next idea was to do one about postmen in the Amazon. She doesn't like that idea either - the people come to collect their post here, not the other way round.
Ideas are falling away rapidly and we've been here less than an hour.

When we ask about the El Dorado guy, she looks a bit angry, but tells us roughly where he lives.

It's good to know...

... we've teamed up with The Co-operative for this competition. We have a team of experts ready to watch the films, and they will choose which one will win a cash prize of £2,000, which ones get shown to a Channel4 Commissioning Editor, and which ones have the chance to be shown on Channel 4 itself on their 3 Minute Wonder strand.
