Such a shame he walked but listening to his reasons for doing so, it's hard to disagree. Fair enough, people jump through hoops to get in the house, but I think unless you are in there 24/7 you can't grasp the "reality" of it. I think it would initially be like you getting the job of your dreams and discovering very quickly that the "dream" job turns out to be a nightmare - and how many of us can say we've been in a similar position job wise? Quite a few, I would think.
