Comedy Police Review

Keith Fields

The Suspect: 8 Out of 10 Cats

Comedy Police Officer Bruceboy investigated comedian and magician Keith Fields at Jongleurs, Watford on 15 November 2008. Here's his report:

Jolly good fun, what?

Keith's a prankster, a japester and - most importantly - a funster. I'd say funjuror but that's reminiscent of Paul Daniels and no one deserves that. Least of all this fellow, who's been accoladed Time Out Entertainer of the Year, mingled comedy clubs with kids' parties and once strut his stuff for Prince Andrew at Windsor Castle for the Variety Club.

Twenty minutes in his company sail by, which is surely the point. One minute he's reviving music-hall gags ("You only play this place twice: once on the way up, once on the way down. Welcome back"), the next he's upgrading old magic tricks (it ain't what you do and all that). Add a healthy dose of smut - usually regarding the size of his tackle, tee hee - plus a spot of in-crowd banter and this is a solid, enjoyable set, no doubt about it.

Keith's been accused of being unoriginal. But Steve Coogan's Paul Calf character is as old as Aristophanes, Jack Dee's 'butter-side-down' approach harks back to Max Wall, even 'The League Of Gentlemen' has much in common with one Bram Stoker. The guy ain't out to claim a place in history, he's up there to give the punters a dashed good time. And yup, this is a very good time indeed.
