Comedy Police Review

Jason Cook

The Suspect: Jason Cook

Comedy Police Officer Luke Wilson investigated comedian Jason Cook at XS Malarky on 22 July 2008. Here's his report:

"Remember everyone you've ever loved; Your first kiss, date, wedding and funeral. Remember every family Christmas, every Easter and every journey you've taken in life. Reminisce it all because only then are you halfway to understanding Jason Cooks new Edinburgh show 'Joy'.

"For all who have witnessed Jason Cook before you'll be well aware of the brutal honesty his gags are delivered with. His talent for bonding with audiences on an emotional level and drawing them into his world is what puts him beyond all the comics on the circuit today. His previous Edinburgh show "My Confessions" was a touching comedy performance which ripped the emotions out from you, throwing you headfirst into his stories with such a visceral flair it felt as though you were sitting on his shoulder with his angels and demons witnessing the events firsthand. His new show "Joy" brings his talents full circle; notching it up to eleven and off the scale with the warning - may contain moments of unadulterated happiness.

"He starts off the show displaying his talents to full effect; building up the usual decor of rapport with the audience and finding time to reminisce his last visit to XS Malarkey with a girl in the front row he arranged to be crowd surfed out the door. He is the picturesque jovial prankster, the older brother who finds fun no matter how dark and sinister the situation is and he's not afraid to show it. Telling stories of being arrested for piracy in Iran and being drove out to the desert in the boot of a car with a gun to his head, all the while thinking 'the car boot of my mum's Chevrolet is nicer than this' sets the tone perfectly.

"Suddenly he off in a new direction launching into the joys in his life; how his friends and family have kept him smiling through all the bad luck he has had to endure, and you can't help but smile with him. The show does take a dark twist and did leave a sour taste in everyone's mouth when he decided to insult the entire audience. But credit to him, he pulled it all back in an instant. Leaving everyone with the joys of Christmas, Santa hats, losing a loved one and ending with the sight of Toby Hadoke being gladly pelted with all the fresh socks he ever wanted.
