Comedy Police Review

Felix Dexter

The Suspect: Felix Dexter

Comedy Police Officer Bruceboy investigated comedian Felix Dexter at Comedy on the Common, London 28 September 2008 . Here's his report:

"There are two sides to Felix Dexter. It's a positive and negative, night 'n' day, ying 'n' proverbial yang thing.

"'Cause he kicks off with some fairly straight stand-up. You know the kinda stuff - isn't public transport rubbish, aren't our partners jolly silly, aren't we all pretty stoopid too. It's perfectly respectable - and chucklesome - but we have, you guessed it, heard it all before. Lenny Bruce did it about politics, Bob Monkhouse did it about his wife's cooking, and if you're reading this you probably do it yourself when you're down the pub.

"But just when you're reaching for another beer, Felix slips into a dazzling gamut of characters. And by Gad, he's great. Worthy of all the above and then some: Harry Enfield, Omid Djalili, even Jennifer Saunders spring to mind... Yet greatest of all is his middle-class lawyer, a complete ponce convinced he hasn't betrayed his Caribbean background. It's like watching every episode of 'Till Death Do Us Part' condensed into two minutes, with a bit of Mayallian mania and a barrel of Djalili-esque daring to boot; but ultimately, it's Felix, and no one does it better. Add some more personal, heart-felt anecdotes and you're left with an excellent, hard-hitting and - rare indeed - distinctive bout of hilarity.

"What a guy. And what a set. And what an idiot I was to reach for that beer."
