Comedy Police Review

Coming of Age

The Suspect: Coming of Age

Comedy Police Officer investigated new BBC3 comedy Coming of Age Here's his report:

"Coming of Age is a brand new sitcom written by 19-year-old Tim Dawson. It apparently takes a candid look into the outrageous world of a group of sixth form students as they enjoy a final romp with adolescence.

"The advert of the show showed a girl, flicking jellybeans in the air and a boy spanking a stuffed monkey etc left me under no illusion at all. It was going to be a sitcom about youthful angst wrapped up in a sexual innuendo.

"I have to admit watching the show I didnt find the teenage girl offering a blow job to her teacher in return for a better grade on her assignment funny at all. Maybe it is my age but it seemed rather grubby if not paedophilic. However, as you would expect in comedy there is a twist near the end of the show. This arises when the teacher only giving her an F as apposed to the A she wanted and as such, the teacher soon gets his comeuppance.

"How I hear you ask? Well it involves a very unrealistically choreographed scene whereby the teacher is lured to the school's swimming pool in his swimming trunks. He is blindfolded in the pool and his mouth taped and has his trunks removed by the girl. The girl then leaves the pool with the trunks and locks the door of the swimming pool. We then see the teacher and the two main male characters of the show, who have also been lured in a similar way grouping around in the pool feeling each other believing the other is the girl???? It has to be asked why the teacher didn't see the two boys in the pool before he was blindfolded and why the two boys didn't hear the teacher and girl talking in the pool? I guess we will never know. The punch line is that fire alarm goes off and the assembling pupils walking passed the swimming pool window see all three naked and a newspaper headline Teacher and boys in sex scandal.

"The show just didn't have enough laughs in it to make me want to tune in to the second episode. It felt like the show was trying to be far too much like Two pints of larger and a packet of crisps but for the teen market. For me it just didnt work at all. Swear words in comedy can in the right place and at the right time be hilarious but it just didn't work in this show at all. Maybe it is just me but the BBC seems to have lost the plot lately and with Coming of Age they seem to be sinking rather than swimming."
