Dave Gorman's documentary film, America Unchained , has won the Audience Award for best Documentary Feature at the Austin Film Festival in Texas. It will be broadcast on More4 in the New Year. Also, he has recently finished filming Genius , a comedy series which sees Dave and a celebrity guest ponder the ridiculous, unworkable but sometimes genius inventions, schemes and policies of the public. A special one-off show will be filmed on 23 November. Crackin' stuff Dave!
Keeping our comedy streets safe today is Bruceboy filing his comedy report on Jason John Whitehead, 12 November at The Old Rope, London:
"Canadian comic Jason John Whitehead wanders onstage as if by accident. He picks up the mic like he doesn't know what it's there for. He chats away like your best mate down the pub...
"It's all so effortless. And professional.
"For me, there are two (equally wonderful) extremes of stand-up: Eddie Izzard's ease of delivery, Bob Monkhouse's bashing out of gags... And Jason combines 'em both.
"When he kicks off by mocking us Brits and our booze-binging you don't think this is a tired topic, you just settle back and enjoy the banter. When he casually relates how he got nicked at the airport you don't think 'where's the punchline?-' you just listen enraptured and enjoy the punchline like you didn't expect it in the first place. And when he pretends to stack up bar-stools you don't think 'improvisational comedy', you just watch and laugh like it's your bosom pal being silly at a party.
"But there's a keen brain behind all this, and Jason knows it. He may play the fool, but it's a fool who can tease an audience... who can rip hecklers to shreds. Who can take a subject, any subject, and turn it on its head and leave you gasping for more. Strippers, sex shops, chat-up lines, even coming across your flat-mate's sex aid - it's all been done before... but never with such cool authority and such cooler spontaneity.
"You could say art conceals art. I prefer to say Jason's a natch."
