Talent Spotting: Part 1
Demelza Hill's Snap and Dine disposable cutlery is just one example of the innovative design ideas being showcased at 100% Design
If you want to find the designers of the future there’s no better place to look than the 100% Design exhibition. Here’s our pick of some of the best new talent we found at the 2007 show. Buy their designs now, and you could be investing in an antique of the future...
Demelza Hill
This lady is definitely one to watch, just ask the British Council. They picked Demelza out of thousands of design graduates to represent the UK at their show in Milan earlier this year.
The Snap and Dine disposable cutlery set that she showcased there is a genius take on eating outdoors, with a nod to traditional English table manners (belch), and the ideas just keep coming. Best of all is Reveal Lighting – a sculptural indoor light that unzips and spirals to the floor releasing more and more light as it unfolds. Very bright stuff.
David Irwin
This chap’s work is so brilliantly executed it’s hard to believe he only graduated this year. David was presented with the 2007 Peter Walker Award for innovation in furniture design at the New Designers graduate showcase in July and has landed at 100% Design this month to show a wider audience what he’s made of. His award-winning Lounge Chair has a gorgeous soap flake finish that is perfectly matched by the green upholstery with chunky fastenings
David's dining chairs are dash more eccentric. The sleek, black stained chairs come in various guises – there’s even one with a dog bowl attached – but the best has to be the one with the coquettish leg (pictured).
