Built-in window Rather than sacrificing a window to suit your wet room design, or splashing out to move it, why not incorporate it? Your builder can create a frosted glass panel to sit in front of the actual window and flush with your tiles so that water can’t permeate it. All that natural light will be worth the effort.

Build it, tile it Wet rooms are just that – wet. So, it makes sense to cover surfaces with water-resistant tiles, and that includes sinks. Fussy angles, pedestals and ceramics all need regular drying otherwise they look constantly splattered, so you’ll be glad you chose fittings that are easy to wipe.

Put in a step If your wet room doubles as your main bathroom, a step to confine the wet area is a must. You needn’t splash out on getting one built in to your floor though – a super-size shallow shower tray does the job.

Glass not curtains A wet room needs to look super-sleek to work, so ditch the idea of a shower curtain in favour of a smart, glazed panel. Where to hang it? It needn’t go right across the opening to the wet room – they are supposed to be open, after all – just hang it so that the shower area is accessible, though not awkward to reach.

Plan a niche Wall-hung shelves are a real no-no in a wet room as they’re constantly wet. Instead, knock a niche into the wall, making sure that the bottom shelf has a slight slope so that the water runs off, but your shampoo bottles stay put.

Choose non-slip Wet room floors need to be non-slip as well as waterproof. That means natural stone (not marble), treated concrete, treated dark woods, such as teak (check out William Garvey for great designs) and Corian.
