Ideally, your home should have both a shower enclosure or cubicle and a bath. Even if your shower has to be fitted as an en suite, there are no end of clever tricks to maximise its impact.

  • Install a powerful, over-bath shower in a small bathroom, matching it with a clear glass screen to heighten the impression of space.

  • In a larger room, install a wet-room-style shower - whether it drains directly into the floor or into a large, low shower tray.

  • Select the biggest shower tray you can - it will feel luxurious rather than functional.

  • Choose a good-quality shower tray - they're generally made from resin or ceramic, but you can get them in all types of more interesting materials, including marble, slate and even teak.

  • Investigate some of the more interesting shower heads on the market, such as Hansgrohe's Raindance Rainmaker, the world's largest shower, which can be fitted flush to the ceiling, and digital showers, such as the Grohtherm Wireless Shower, which can be switched on and off from any room in the house.

  • Enlist the help of a specialist bathroom designer if you’re going to install a wet room. Many of the top-end bathroom companies, such as Ripples, have one in-house, or consider an architect, because the drainage and waterproofing of the room have to be 100 per cent right.

  • Choose suitable wall and floor coverings for your wet room. Many tile and flooring companies, such as Reed Harris, have vast product ranges to cater for this burgeoning market. Stone (granite, marble, travertine or limestone) is the material of choice because it's very tough and waterproof.
