The Suburban Garden Makeover

Before: At the bottom of the original garden of this house lay a scruffy piece of land that the owners were able to buy.

After: Faced with a large, T-shaped plot which, apart from a beautiful 150-year-old copper beech, was scrubby woodland or just dull, neglected space, the owners decided they needed the help of a garden designer.

Set A Budget

To keep within a tight budget, the designer, Jason Payne, came up with a simple design which incorporated woodland in the new plot; a small stream and pond; and a lawn and patio framed by architectural plants. Find out how to keep your lawn healthy, how to design a patio, and choose plants to suit your garden in our Plants & Plantcare pages.

Save Money

Since the owners had a low budget, they didn't buy expensive mature plants. Instead, all the plants were young and, costing considerably less than mature specimens, were chosen for their rapid growth rates.

Install A Watering System

The garden also has an automatic watering system, which has helped the plants grow quickly in just 18 months. It uses less water than a hosepipe.
