Don’t treat your hallway like an afterthought. Hidden under that worn carpet might be beautiful old tiles that’ll create period style, and there are plenty of other ways to give it character and beauty. Take a look at the choices on offer.
Encaustic tiles are striking patterned tiles that were a popular feature in Victorian hallways, and if you’ve still got them, it’ll already be obvious how durable they are. If you find them under your carpet, or they’re not looking as beautiful as they should, renovate! As well as being decorative – turning your hallway into a show-stopping entrance to your home – these tiles are practical.
If you want to create the look, modern versions of these traditional patterns are available. Find them at Original Style and in the Minton Hollins range at Johnson Tiles.
More often associated with kitchens, terracotta is sometimes found in the hallways of older properties. The warm colours are ideal for creating a welcoming atmosphere, plus it is hard wearing and highly practical, as it won’t show the dirt readily. Terracotta tiles will need to be sealed to prevent staining.
If you like the idea of laying terracotta to give your hall a cosy feel, you can get hand-made and reclaimed as well as new versions, including those with an aged look.
