Whether they are seven or 17, if you expect your children to take homework seriously, it is only fair to give them a space that allows them to work as effectively and comfortably as possible.

It may not make them Nobel-prize winners, but a well-planned, organised and properly lit work space could make a lot of difference in their motivation. Before you start, talk about work areas with them - they may well have clear ideas about what they need that you hadn't considered - and if they get what they want in terms of design or colour scheme, they will be more inclined to use it.
Before you get too carried away with planning the work area, think about where your child normally gets his/her homework done. Do they like to take themselves off somewhere quiet or do they prefer to do it where you are close at hand to offer advice?
Do they work in the dining room because it is the only clear space or because they like it in there? You could create the most fabulous bedroom work station ever, but it may not tempt them away if they simply like doing their homework at the kitchen table. Most children are pretty adaptable, but looking at their present habits is key to creating a work area that will have everything they need.
Bear these points in mind when choosing a location:
* Is there space in their bedroom or playroom for a dedicated work area, and would they use it if there was?
* Could you find some space in a shared room (such as a dining room or kitchen) for files, stationery and books if that is the preferred work area?
* Where will they want to work when they are older? Young children will probably want to work with close parental assistance, while older ones may want peace, quiet and privacy.
* What is it they like about their present favoured spot? Is it a large table to spread out materials, good light (natural or otherwise) or a warm/cool room? Can you replicate these things in their own room or playroom?
