Want to turn your run-of-the-mill bathroom into a gorgeous, relaxing retreat or your shower room into a stylish wet room? Or how about trading your dark cupboard for a to die for en suite? Here's how
Whatever your plans for the space where you wash (and relax... and dream...), there are certain basic principles to be aware of before you start attacking that avocado suite.
Creating a spa bathroom is all about the styling, not the expense. So, you can buy the sanitaryware from DIY stores, which stock perfectly fabulous contemporary or period roll tops and not-so-run-of-the-mill basins. You can also buy wallpaper from DIY sheds, flooring and heating products, too.
We're not going to lie to you - a big bathroom will undoubtedly have a greater air of luxury than a small one but you can still create that spa bathroom feel with the right sanitaryware and decor. For inspiration, see our Bathroom Design Ideas page.
Want to change the layout of your bathroom to fit a freestanding bath under a window or to make room for a shower? Don't skimp - get a qualified plumber round first to tell you if your plans will be workable.
Spa bathrooms will only be at their most fabulous if you don't have to look at cleaning products and kids' bath toys, so good storage space is a real bonus. How about a slim shelf above the bath for pretty bottles, a floor-to-ceiling corner cupboard to hide away loo rolls, and a freestanding cabinet to stash your razors?
Squeezing in too much will give you a room that looks crowded, so being prepared to downsize the bath slightly, or swapping a bidet for good storage will help you get a sleek finish first go.
Ah, what we wouldn't give for a good tradesperson who could do the plumbing, tiling and electrics. Best bet is to ask your friends, family and the bathroom showroom for recommendations. Or try www.ciphe.org.uk or MyBuilder.
