Design A Period Bathroom

A Period Bathroom. Planning A Period Bathroom

If your home is a period property, you might like to do away with the traditional approach to bathroom design and create a room that truly fits in with your home's style. It's easy to do in terms of styling, especially if you are transforming what was once a bedroom into a new bathroom.

A Period Bathroom. Planning a Period Bathroom

Mix Old & New

The trick is to mix and match reclaimed pieces, reproductions and junk shop finds to create a bathroom that looks as if it evolved over time. This means your bathroom's look may not come together all at once - you might need to have the patience to let it evolve over time.

Open Shelving

Chunky floating shelves add a modern touch in a period-style room. You can buy them cheaply from IKEA and DIY shops in standard lengths, but a joiner can make them to fit your space exactly. Or, find out how to make floating shelves in our step by step guide.

Period Features

Make the most of what you have - alcoves cry out for shelves or cabinets, for example. If you're lucky enough to have an old fireplace, the mantel makes a perfect space for displaying accessories and candles. Find out how to restore your fire surround here.

Paint Your Bath

Old roll-top tubs give you a rare chance to customise by painting the outside. Be bold and make a statement with a bright colour in an all-white scheme, or use a shade to co-ordinate with the rest of the bathroom. Try Antique Bathrooms Of Ivybridge.

Shabby Chic

If you've blown your budget on key items, save money and create a more authentic feel with some reconditioned buys, such as a castiron radiator. Find your nearest salvage yard at www.salvo.co.uk.

Shutter Style

Want to make a great feature of your windows? Classic shutters are an ideal choice for period style bathrooms. Try The Shutter Shop and check out our feature on window shutters.

Bare Is Best

Painted floorboards are particularly suited to this style, and as black and white was such a classic look for Victorian bathrooms, go for a dark stain. If your floorboards aren't up to scratch, mimic the look with a good-quality laminate, suitable for use in a bathroom.
