I guess you just have to compromise. You can keep a traditional look to the bedroom whilst adding a modern twist to it. Keep traditional features to the room, but maybe jazz the whole room up with some accessories that your teen chooses. What I would suggest is to get you son/daughter to write a list of all of the things that they like or dislike about the room, and then discuss what you would/would not be happy to change.
