Reduce Your Phone Bill

There are so many ways to make a call these days - mobile, fixed line, over the internet, think about your phone usage, when you make calls and to where and find a deal that fits (cost effectively). Tariffs can be complicated so use comparison websites to find a simple solution. Make sure you compare like with like (for instance, deals over the same time span). Or to maximise savings, visit Moneysavingexpert where Martin Lewis says there's no need to pay more than £20 a month for a top home phone package and broadband combined.

Become A Risk Assessor

You could be wasting thousands of pounds on useless and expensive insurance, according to Which? Whilst life insurance and separate cover for cars, buildings and contents is vital, it argues that other cover such as ID theft insurance, extended warranties, mobile phone cover and payment protection insurance are often completely unnecessary. So do your own risk assessment and decide what you really need.

Don't renew automatically. Compare several quotes (like for like) and cut out unnecessary cover. Use two comparison websites and cross compare. Also, some of the biggest insurers offer their best deals direct so be prepared to pick up the phone too!

Get The Benefit!

If your family income is under £66,000, you may be entitled to benefits and tax-credits. You can check you're not missing out really easily at Entitledto.com.

Ways To Save More Money

1 Turn the heating down and put on another layer. Give your home an energy check up and save around £250 a year. Visit Energy Saving Trust.

2 Why not holiday at home this year? Too drastic? Then at least book flights, hotels, car hire early and on the internet for the best bargains.

3 Cancel the gym membership (if you cancel the cleaner and gardener and do it yourself, hey, there's your new workout!)

4 Bank online! An ICM poll from Abbey found that nearly 40 per cent of those who bank online found they were saving more money. They were better able to determine when to tighten their belts and when to tuck away any extra in savings.

  1. Minimise your garge bills by having a go at at carrying out your basic car repairs and servicing. Pick up a cheap used Haynes Manual on eBays and check out the Forums run by enthusiasts.

  2. I agree - never buy new as virtually everything depreciates massively in the first year or 2, whether its cars, furniture, clothes etc. vintage is cool and cheap, and old furniture is not only recycling but also means it will have already released most of its harmful chemicals on the original owner!

  3. I've got some more tips that are working for me: Make shopping lists before you hit the supermarket Use your local market or butcher, cheaper and you save on packaging and food miles. Buy old pictures in charity shops and reuse the frames for your favourite designs or even paint your own. Buy old furniture too, it can easily be painted for a fresh look. Credit crunch, you just make us more inventive and creative.
