
So, the overall picture is a barely positive reaction. The most interesting tv interview yesterday was with Lord Lamont, who was an equally ill-starred Chancellor of the Exchequer for the Conservatives back in the early nineties, when similar (if slightly more generous) measures with stamp duty were taken then. He said that in retrospect, the stamp duty holiday he created had little or no effect on the market.
However, possibly the best news is that the announcements themselves have been made. This will allow anyone was holding back to put their house up for sale or to make that offer - and this in itself may breathe a little optimism back into the market, which could be enough, if not to help it rise then to maintain its current status - rather than allowing it to drop further.
