
If you decide to DIY, don't assume you're going to have to spend loads on new equipment – get to know your neighbours! Those nice people next door might have a drill they can lend you for the odd job, or a ladder that reaches just that bit further than yours, so that you don’t have to buy your own. (Of course, now you're the expert, you might have to let them in on your DIY secrets in return!)
If you do need to use a trader, shop around. Recommendations from friends or family are worth a packet - but even then, you should make sure you get at least three quotes before committing yourself to anything. And did you know, you could also save money by getting a government grant for certain types of energy saving repairs?
When self-building and taking on big projects, make sure your costs don’t get out of hand by budgeting and planning the build carefully. Research the self-building legalities before you start, to avoid costly mistakes.
Even the little projects need careful planning. When you next head out to the supermarket or DIY store, make a list first, so that you stick to your spending plan and don’t get led into temptation. Even if you’re just food shopping, don’t go when you’re hungry – all sorts of naughty snacks will find their way into your trolley.
