Monty Waldin believes that good wine doesn’t have to cost the earth. And so after more than a decade as a wine writer and critic, he put his money where his opinionated mouth is, and ventured off into the unknown territory of the winemaker. He had just eighteen months to prove what he’s long believed - that it is possible to create a good quality, affordable wine using organic and biodynamic methods.

It wasn't easy. Finding and renting a certified organic vineyard; sourcing non-mechanical equipment, organic farming materials, and tending the crops ‘by hand’; risking time, money and reputation on a project that could go nowhere; building a new life away from his friends and family in a small corner of rural France.

Biodynamics involves the avoidance of all chemicals, harvesting in accordance to lunar cycles, and a reliance on the balance of nature to protect and feed the crops. One bad storm, a rogue boar, or a diseased vine could have (and very nearly did) send Monty packing. And when a car crash rendered him immobile, Monty risked losing it all. Fortunately, he was surrounded by a host of eccentric characters – the farmers and villagers of St Martin – who were intrigued by this British man and his strange ideals, and were prepared to lend a hand. But was it enough? Did Monty succeed in creating a fine wine, or did he return home with his tail between his legs to face the sneers of his peers?

About the author: Regarded by some as the enfant terrible of the wine industry, Monty Waldin has nonetheless forged a successful career as a wine critic, and has written several award-winning books. He grew up in Winchester, and when he’s not tending his vines in Roussillon, he lives in Tuscany with his girlfriend Silvana.

About the wine: Exclusive to Adnams, the wine has the aromas of young, herby red fruits and a lively, juicy mouthful of charmingly rustic hedgerow flavours. Available from Adnams Cellar & Kitchen Stores and adnams.co.uk at RRP £7.99.
